Tesla is launching a new 420 watt solar panel, which is currently one of the most powerful residential solar panels on the market.
As Elon Musk is accepting Tesla’s trial of SolarCity in Delaware, the automaker’s Energy is quietly launching a new solar module for its solar roof business.
Although solar roof tiles have attracted most of the attention, Tesla’s solar panels still represent most of its solar business.
Tesla has been revamping its solar panel business in the past few years, and as the division has resumed growth in the past few quarters, it has recently begun to reap returns.
With new pricing and a new price matching policy, Tesla Solar has become extremely competitive, and the company increased its installed capacity to 92 MW in the last quarter.
The automaker has not yet updated its online solar panel configurator. It still has only Hanwha Solar’s 340-watt solar panel manufacturer.
However, Electrek has confirmed with a third-party Tesla solar installer that they are beginning to provide a new 420 watt panel, which is more powerful than the previous ones and is one of the most powerful residential solar panels on the market.
Electrek was able to obtain data sheets shared between Tesla and installers. The efficiency of the panel is not higher, with an efficiency of 19.8%, but it is larger, allowing fewer modules to be used per installation.
“The Tesla module is currently one of the most powerful residential photovoltaic modules. Our system requires up to 20% less modules to achieve the same power as the standard system. The module has high conversion efficiency and a half-cell that can improve negative resistance. Architecture.”
The new module uses technology developed by Zep Solar, which was acquired by SolarCity before being acquired by Tesla.
“Using our proprietary Zep Groove design, the all-black module can be easily connected to Tesla ZS components, bringing the panels close to the roof and close to each other, achieving a mixed aesthetic through simple plug-in and precise quarter-turn connections.”
It is not clear when the installation of solar installations with new modules will begin, and whether it will affect the current pricing and options for 340-watt panels:

In January of this year, the automaker also launched its own solar inverter because it is trying to provide a complete solar ecosystem.
Tesla is a transportation and energy company. It sells cars in the “Tesla Motors” division and stationary battery packs for household, commercial and utility scale projects in the “Tesla Energy” division.
